Binge-A-Thone..

You need cheering up
The scenario
When you are feeling low, indulging in that dark chocolate cake can be a temporary solution because it raises the body’s blood sugar level. However, uncontrolled eating can further make you feel miserable because you begin to loathe yourself for not having enough self-control.

The solution
Tackle the issue that’s causing the problem. For example, if it’s a relationship that’s not working out, opt for counselling sessions. Alternatively, you can also opt for foods that act as mood boosters. A good example would be oily fish and slow-releasing carbs such as khichdi, wholemeal bread and pulses. Also, try vibrantly coloured fruit and vegetables. Not only do they provide a feel good factor, but are also low in fat content.

You are bored
The scenario
Boredom drives many of us to overeating during the evening or by the end of a busy day. It can also drive us to indulge excessively when going through a dull day in office or while working on a boring project.

The solution
Try to keep yourself stimulated with activities other than eating. It could be something as simple as calling an old friend, writing an e-mail or going for a walk. If the task at hand seems too difficult, break it down to smaller tasks and achieve it step by step. To constantly remind yourself of what you could do instead of eating, write and keep a list of ‘distraction activities’, so that every time you feel tempted to eat, it’s easier to switch over with just a glance on the list.

You are stressed
The scenario
You have a family to look after, office targets to achieve and other million things to take care of. As a result, when stress takes its toll, it is very easy to respond by bingeing that helps you take your mind off the things you need to juggle.
The solution
Exercise is an effective way to fight stress. So, the next time you feel stressed out, go for a brisk walk instead of reaching for a biscuit. Carbs, particularly the slow-releasing type, are also good stress busters. So, if you need to indulge, have moderate portions of bread, potatoes, pasta, rice or noodles.

You want to celebrate
The scenario
From landing a dream job to successfully getting through a tough day — just as many of us eat when we’re in celebratory mood as when we’re down. After all, celebrating with a hearty meal is a part of our culture.
The solution
Try to focus your celebration on things other than eating. For example, you can buy yourself flowers or congratulate yourself with a massage or manicure instead. In short, anything that feels like a treat but doesn’t involve stuffing your face.
